The HSPVA Symphony Orchestra provides a pre-college full orchestra experience to each of its members with the goal of presenting the highest quality performances on our campus and in the community. The full Symphony Orchestra meets every other day for 90 minutes, and the string section meets on the intervening days. The orchestra season usually includes four symphony and two chamber orchestra concerts throughout the school year. The majority of performances are held in the Denney Theater on the HSPVA campus. The last concert of the year is traditionally held off campus either in Rice University’s Stude Hall at the Shepherd School of Music, or at the Moores Opera House on the campus of the University of Houston.

The HSPVA Symphony is structured like a comprehensive youth orchestra program and performs demanding repertoire. Programs include traditional classical works beginning in the 18th century as well as compositions written in the past ten years. Students have opportunities to work with living composers in rehearsals on campus. Recent concert programs have included works of Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Brahms, Mussorgsky, Hindemith, Jennifer Higdon, Pierre Jalbert and John Adams.
